Blue Ridge

Scottsville on the James, the Heart of James River Country

First known as "Scott's Landing," Scottsville served as Virginia's westernmost center of government and commerce during the 1700s, was Albemarle County’s original county seat - home to Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, as well as contemporary notables: musician Dave Matthews, author John Grisham, actress Sissy Spacek, philanthropist John Kluge. People who value the rural quality of life, the lively arts community, and the easy pace of life that seems so natural in a river town that provides most affordable living the in one of the wealthiest per-capita county in the United States (second only to Orange County, CA). The “world class” city of Charlottesville is only 20 miles up the road, and which, being home to “Mr. Jefferson’s University,” the University of Virginia, with its world renowned Medical Center, was recently voted "Best Place to Live in America."

The Scottsville area’s historic homes, taverns, inns - which include such world famous estates as Jefferson's Monticello, Madison’s Montpelier, and Monroe’s Ash Lawn-Highland - afford visitors from across the country and around the world with a “step back in time.” At the same time its close proximity to Charlottesville, an easy 20 mile drive up the road, affords easy access to this “world class” cultural and entertainment center which is home to “Mr. Jefferson’s University,” the University of Virginia, and its world renowned Medical Center, as well as its lively Downtown.

Scottsville has played a crucial part in Piedmont Virginia's rich history, playing critical roles in both the War of American Independence, and the War of Southern Independence. Historic homes, taverns, and cemeteries, and offers easy access to nearby points of interest such as Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe, the beautiful campus of the University of Virginia, and lovely and lively Downtown Charlottesville - while still having the benefit and joy of remaining a vital resource to the surrounding areas. Located at the crossroads of three beautiful rural counties, and nestled on a horseshoe bend in the mighty James River, as a river-town Scottsville was at one point the natural choice to be the seat of Albemarle County. Now, although the days of bateaus and flatboats have long past, it is still a thriving small town with big town dreams, and it invites you to be part of it bright future.
